I just finished reading Anthony Bourdain’s last interview. As usual, I agreed with some of what he said, disagreed with more, and was thoroughly entertained throughout. In any case, there is nothing here to suggest a man on the brink.
When a celebrity commits suicide, we tell ourselves that they must have had a dark side we didn’t see. What makes Bourdain’s suicide such a shock that is that we assumed we had been seeing his dark side all along. He was not shy about his problems or any of the awful choices he’s made in life. And, although he was never Mr. Happy-Go-Lucky, he seemed to be someone who had figured out how to carry on in the face of guilt and self-doubt.
There’s been a lot of speculation about the man since he died, but the only person who really knows why Anthony Bourdain killed himself is Anthony Bourdain. I’ll miss him. He made me laugh. He made me mad. He made me think.
